Gmail Finally Allows Users to Change Email Addresses After 22 Years

Gmail marked its 22nd anniversary this Wednesday, having first launched on April 1, 2004. To celebrate this milestone, the service has introduced a highly requested new feature.

For the first time, Gmail is allowing users to change their email addresses. This update comes in response to long-standing feedback from users who were dissatisfied with the usernames they created years ago but felt stuck with them. To address this, Google has now enabled the option to modify the primary username of an existing account.

How to Change Your Gmail Address
Users can access this feature by navigating to Settings and selecting the “Personal Info” section. However, there are a few conditions to keep in mind:

  • Frequency: This change can only be made once per year.
  • Data Safety: All existing emails and data will remain perfectly safe after the transition.
  • Dual Access: Your original Gmail address will remain linked to your account as an alternate email. This means you can still receive messages sent to the old address and use either the old or new username to log in to Google services.
